Billy Graham once said: “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”
There are multiple traits of a good father that can be found in the Bible, however being a good father must start with the father simply being present. Fathers are the backbone of the family, and while a father’s presence in the life of his child is absolutely crucial there is so much more to being a good father than just living in the same house.
The role of fathers is extremely important, there are directions on how to be a good father throughout the Bible. To advice you on what the Bible says about being a good father, we’ve rounded up some bible verses about fathers, fatherhood, parenting, and qualities of fathers.
Be your child's teacher
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6
Be a provider
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. - I Timothy. 5:8
Discipline your child
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him [a]promptly. - Proverbs 13: 24
Be compassionate
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. - Psalm 103:13
Do not provoke your children to wrath
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. - Ephesians 6:4
Encourage and comfort your child
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, - 1 Thessalonians 2:11
Obviously there is a lot more to being a good father than these six points, realistically, even when you try your best to be a good father, you are not going to be a perfect one.
I am challenging you however as a dad to think and do these six characteristics from Scripture
