But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. -Galatians 5:22-23
As children of God the life that we live should reflect a godlike character, the fruits of the spirit are the characters that set us apart from the rest of the world. The fruits of the spirit are what defines us as Christians.
Love - Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. - 1 John 4:7-8
Joy - Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. - Philippians 4:4&11
Peace - Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. - Matthew 5:9
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. - Colossians 3:15
Long Suffering - And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; - Romans 5:3
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose. - Romans 8:18&28
Gentleness - A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. - Proverbs 15:1
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and heath to the bones. - Proverbs 16:24
Goodness - As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. - Galatians 6:10
Faith - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. - Hebrews 11: 1&6
Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. - Mark 11:24
Meekness - Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. - Matthew 5:5
The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. - Psalms 147:6
The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. - Isaiah 29:19
Temperance - He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without wall. - Proverbs 25:28
While Christians are expected to produce these fruits, the fruits of the spirit are produced by the holy spirit and not by the Christians. As we (Christians) give the spirit more control over our lives we will begin to see the evidence of the fruits of the spirit in our lives, we will begin to see our character becoming more Christ like.
